Written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan, it later appeared on the band’s 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God. The song pairs MacGowan and MacColl’s contrasting vocals in a bittersweet story of a couple reflecting on dreams, hardship and life in New York. Though it has become one of the UK’s best-loved Christmas songs, it never reached number one there: it peaked at number two on its original release, kept from the top by the Pet Shop Boys’ “Always on My Mind”. Its lasting popularity is reflected in its regular return to the UK Top 20 at Christmas, including every year since 2005.
