Written by Holly Johnson, Peter Gill, Mark O’Toole and Brian Nash, the song was released as the album’s third single on 19 November 1984. Its spiritual imagery and the Nativity-inspired music video helped make it a seasonal favourite, though the song itself does not mention Christmas. The track reached number one on the UK singles chart and spent one week at the top, before being overtaken by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. With its emotional vocal, atmospheric production and themes of love and devotion, “The Power of Love” remains one of the band’s best-known recordings and a distinctive choice for both 1980s and Christmas playlists.
